Mariatou Camara was born in Guinea, West Africa. At a young age, she spent several years performing with the highly acclaimed dance company, Les Merveilles d'Afrique and would eventually become one of the lead dancers for Les Ballets Africains, under the direction of Italo Zambo and Kemoko Sano.
